Discoveries and an idea.......... from Exuberant Color

My post today will be in reverse order to explain how I get ideas.

This is sewing from 2 nights, 82 blocks.  (total number from several days = 269).  As I was sewing them, I was considering an all triangle square center of a baby quilt.  I was trying to decide if all of the ones with the same 2 fabrics would be grouped together or if I would spread them out in a random grouping.  Then I started thinking about how else I could use them: a small center with a border around it and then another round of triangle ...

Sorting scraps............. from Exuberant Color

Since I didn't have anything lined up to sew last night, I decided to sort through my Marcia Derse scraps that were in 3 project boxes.  The box on the left is now all strips of various widths and lengths and the box on the right is scraps large enough to cut 2" finished triangles or larger.  In the plastic bags are small irregular shaped scraps in one, and pieced strips left from previous projects in the other.  Now I'm down to 2 boxes.  I will reserve the empty box for any new MD scraps that I create ...

Triangles................. from Exuberant Color

Not much happened here yesterday.  We had beautiful weather and it was a good day for relaxing.

I have 111 of 143 triangles squares sewn, none pressed yet.  I need to cut a few more pink triangles to continue.  I was able to get 144 6" triangles out of 2 1/2 yards of the grey and white dotted fabric that is paired with a variety of pinks, leftovers from 2 other projects.

I rarely buy panels with Marcia Derse panels being the exception.  This one could be cut up in used in many blocks or maybe as a section ...

Thinking more than doing.............. from Exuberant Color

One of my readers wondered if Marcia Derse fabrics would work with the Terrie Mangat fabrics.  Marcia's newest line, Marble Run, does have some that will work and will give me the almost solid look for some of the pieces.

This Nancy Crow black/white stripe might work.  I have the opposite piece also, white/black.

This uneven black/white check might work too.  I will cut some pieces to do some mockups.

I may not use all of the Marcia Derse fabrics but I have a good selection to choose from.

I also found 3 black/white prints ...

It's a finished quilt top!............................. from Exuberant Color

Surprised?  I am!  I sewed the rest of the triangle blocks and cut a few more spacer blocks yesterday.  All Marcia Derse fabric. When I started arranging them on the design wall I had exactly enough pieces to make a  40" x 40" quilt top.  I took that as a sign that I was ready to sew it together.  I finished it in time to take a daylight photo.  It could be a wall hanging or baby quilt.

Did I use all of the triangles?  No.  Most of the ones left are 1, 2 or 3 alike with just a ...

Finally a peek at what I'm doing............ from Exuberant Color

These pieces are up on the design wall in no particular order right now.  I just wanted to get a feel for what I have been planning to do and see if it is going to work.  I have a lot more triangles to sew together but now I feel like I know where I'm headed with this.

So far I'm only using scraps; I have lots of yardage I could dip into.

At this point I think I will have enough pieces to made a baby quilt.  When I give someone a choice between 3 - 5 baby ...

Sewn and pressed....................... from Exuberant Color

Finally I have a few more of the triangle blocks sewn.  There are more to sew, little by little.

I spent part of the day yesterday going through everything in a big desk.  I found some things I can take to the thrift store, some I need to shred, more that I need to find a place for.  Not an exciting day but necessary.

My slump month?.............. from Exuberant Color

Usually every summer I have a couple months where I have few or no quilt tops or finishes to show.  The last 2 years have been the exception with something to show every month.  Last year I had 11 finishes in the first 6 months and this year I had 20.  I think this is more of a time of contemplation, what I really want to make, what fabrics I really want to use.  While I contemplate I go out and pull weeds and talk to my tomato plants. I also planted some little Begonias in a pot yesterday.  I ...

Preliminary sewing................ from Exuberant Color

Since I don't have a solid plan for this quilt, I'm just sewing some blocks to play with.  First I went through the trays and chose all of the fabrics of which there were at least 12 triangles.  I sewed several batches of them last night.

This is the rest of the sets of 12 triangles paired and ready to sew.

This one is upside down and I didn't notice that until I was typing this post.  This one has stripes and 6 are horizontal, 6 are vertical.  I had to lay this one out to see ...

What's next.................. from Exuberant Color

I don't have any definite plans for a new project (3 in cutting stage right now) so I pulled out the trays of Marcia Derse triangles that I cut from scraps a couple years ago.  I have more scraps that I could cut up too.

There is a fairly good variety cut already so I can go ahead and start sewing and cut as I need more variety.  They are 2" finished triangles.

3 trays full of triangles, probably enough for a baby quilt, maybe a small one.

My destash sale this week has been very successful so I ...

First quilt top for May 2024 from Exuberant Color

The last 2 seams were sewn last night and I pressed the top.  I'm really happy with the border triangle fabric.  It needed to be something that just contrasted and filled in but didn't stand out.  I was pretty sure it had to be a gold tone too.  Luckily my Marcia Derse stash had the right fabric.  This top ended up 47" x 64".  The size wasn't determined ahead of time; I just worked on it until I was tired of it and that was the end.  I have enough of the dull gold stripe to use ...

Back from time out..................... from Exuberant Color

I was working on this Marcia Derse quilt back in January and couldn't decide on what fabric to cut into triangles to finish the edge.  The rows have been pinned on top of each other over at the side of my design wall for over 3 months.  I have a beige piece tucked into the edge here and it is a contender.

This dull gold fabric looks better.  I had decided I want a stripe so my choices are limited.  I need to figure out the size to cut the quarter square triangles and cut a few so I ...

Busy hands, happy life.............. from Exuberant Color

I like to keep busy with fabric whether I have a project or not.  I have 2 project boxes full of Marcia Derse scraps and I keep looking at them and they don't look inspiring in the mess in the box.  I decided to loosely sort the strips by several lengths and slip them into plastic bags.  The odd shaped pieces will go in another bag.

Then if I decide to make blocks similar to this mock up, I will have an easier time selecting the strips.  Sorting is an easy job while watching TV.

There were a lot ...

Last finish for March 2024............. from Exuberant Color

This Marcia Derse Stars quilt top was finished in November 2018 and now it is a finished quilt, thanks to Robin Diaz who quilted it for me.  It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and I hand stitched the binding.

The front, back and binding are all Marcia Derse fabrics from the beginning of her fabrics up through November 2018.

It is 65" x 80".

40" left to hand stitch............. from Exuberant Color

Almost done, just 40" left to hand stitch on this Marcia Derse Stars quilt.  I may do a second post today with the stats for this quilt on it.

I think this will be the very last bloom on the pale pink cactus for this winter/spring season.

There is one more white bud to bloom.  There is another small bud but I can't tell if it is going to grow or dry up.

Happy Easter!!

First quilt top for March.....and the only one.......... from Exuberant Color

The first order of the day yesterday was to sew this top together.  Spa Quads free pattern from Windham fabrics.  The fabrics are by e bond.  I had to go to Free Spirit's website to see the correct spelling of her name.  The lines are Root and Ravel and I used most of the medium and light fabrics.  The dark narrow strips are dark teal and 2 of them are Marcia Derse fabrics.  This top is 60" x 80".  This was a fun fast quilt top.

I got the binding cut and sewn onto the Maria Derse quilt and ...

Another quilt trimmed................ from Exuberant Color

I decided to trim this Marcia Derse Stars quilt to prepare for binding so I could get it off my work table.  Once again black could be a choice for the binding but so could a shade of brown work on this one.

I tried several shades of brown and beige and this one is the best choice.  It had to be a piece that was at least 1/2 yard which eliminated some other choices.

I'm pretty sure this is the winner.  I had hoped I had more of the stripe in the second border but didn't ...

All rows sewn............... from Exuberant Color

I tried to straighten the rows many times but they still ended up on a slant.  The good news though is that all of the rows are sewn.  I put a few gold triangles in the spots at the right side but still am not sure how I will finish this.  It may linger on the design wall for a few days...  I think maybe it needs dark triangles and maybe a border.

For the last 2 days I have been working on batting and backings for 2 more quilts to send out for quilting.  The pattern for this quilt ...

Still sewing diagonal rows................. from Exuberant Color

3 more rows sewn, 5 to go and the best part is each row from here on is shorter as I work toward the bottom left corner.  I haven't made any decision for the color of the outside triangles.

It got up to 18 degrees yesterday so I put on my boots and went out and filled the birdfeeders.  Crunch, crunch through the deep snow that had freezing rain on it twice and froze and then fluffy snow on top.  It's going to take a lot of warm days to melt all of that snow.

Figuring it out as I work............... from Exuberant Color

I cut more gold/yellow/orange triangles and placed some on the design wall.  Then I decided to sew the corner row together.

Three more rows were sewn together as I tried to decide what color the edge triangles will be.  And, what size the triangles should be.  I could put 2 half square triangles which would be easy to figure out but I would rather add one quarter square triangle.

We finally got up to 0 yesterday afternoon and it stayed at 0 all the way to 11 p.m.  I didn't check again after that.  It was ...
